"Children in the Dark"
by Laura Birrell

WTC blows and billows the changes of our time.
Melted all our vanities as we watched eachother dying.
So many angry crying.
Our sky high pride crashed to ashes.
Its time.
Icarus crashed too you know.
A tale we learned as children.
Children we were,
Watching as our wax melted into ash.
It smells they tell me, still,
Rank and chemical.
Unearthly heap of our soaring shattered dream.
From a place on earth where
Shadows lurk and grow
The Shadow so many times stuffed into the Dark
Came jetting through the sky to blow and billow Shadow Rage
Of children left to die.
They tell me of the cradle
Where this Shadow grows.
Rage and hunger for the peace they will not know.
It is the Shadow of our pride
That now lies crushed and smoking.
Did they shed the light to dissipate their Dark
By shattering our pride?
A child screams for love it has always been denied.
We were made to harbor children of the Dark.
Do we hear their cry
Above the blasts of bombs
We have hurled at this Shadow child?
It is ours,
This raging orphan in the dark.
Who severs ladies legs for shining unveiled grace,
Who starves children till the Dark is feast,
Who heaves out death in every breath.
It grows and lurks in rubble we have left.
And our reply is blast.
Peace plead some,
Death scream some,
Crying in our rage at what the Shadow heaved at us.
It is a vision of the Dark we proudly cast.
Unbearable we find it
And bomb it into ash.
Ashes to ashes,
Dust to dust.
The cycle comes to gather us.
A rite of passage into the Dark
Of grief and bitter glory.
Bombs blast
At frightened children who scream at us.
So we answer children with our rage
Our Shadow of the pride
They shattered from the sky.
Flags and rage
And bombs
We answer
To the screams of Children
We have left
Lurking in the Dark.
