Juliet
Sharman-Burke

Juliet
Sharman-Burke was born in Nairobi, Kenya and believes
that her early years in that beautiful land, full of myth and
beauty and the spectacular night sky, shaped her love of stories
and the stars. Even though she has lived most of her adult
life in London her memories of Africa have never faded. She
discovered and was fascinated by tarot in the early seventies,
but it wasn’t until 1976, when she took a course with
David Franklin at the Franklin School in London, that her passing
interest became a passion. She soon realised that there were
many correlations between tarot, astrology and psychology,
so she studied astrology with Liz Greene and did psychotherapy
training at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation in London.
She earned Full Membership status in 1984 and started a private
practise in analytical psychotherapy. At the same time she
began teaching tarot and astrology classes and supervising
students at The Centre for Psychological Astrology in London,
which was created by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas in 1983,
and which Juliet now organises.
Juliet’s
writing career had an unusual start when a 1982 magazine article
about Juliet as a tarot reader generated a huge response from
the public asking for a correspondence course. It seemed that
people from all over England were interested in learning the
tarot, but could not find local classes outside of London. So
she set up a correspondence course that turned into her first
book, The Complete Book of Tarot. A new edition of this
is about to be re-issued with new illustrations and text as The
New Complete Book of Tarot. In 1986 Liz Greene and Juliet
were approached to design a new tarot deck. Their mutual love
of mythology, psychology and imagery resulted in co-writing and
designing The
Mythic Tarot, deck and a book based on the myths of
Greece. The Mythic Tarot went on to become an international
best seller and Juliet followed it with The Mythic Tarot
Workbook, a children’s book retelling the myths of
the zodiac, entitled Stories from the Stars. She also
wrote, Understanding Tarot and Mastering the Tarot,
and The Mythic Journey, a book co-written with Liz Greene
as a guide to everyday life through ancient myths.
Juliet’s
most recent work is the Beginner’s Guide to Tarot,
accompanied by her new deck, the Sharman-Caselli deck.
This deck was designed to be more traditional than The Mythic
Tarot, with imagery drawn from a mixture of the Waite, Marseilles
and Visconti decks. Alongside Juliet’s therapy practise,
teaching, writing and organising the Centre for Psychology, she
teaches in America, Norway, Slovenia and Holland and gives talks
at conferences in the UK
